The Future Of Charitable Giving

Founded in 1945, Christian Aid, one of Britain’s most iconic charities, has been providing humanitarian relief for poor communities worldwide for over 75 years.

Supporting people across the globe with access to vital resources including food, livestock, clean water and sanitation, Christian Aid has devised a whole new way to incentivise donations online: Christian Aid Charity Gifts. Separate from their main website, Christian Aid Charity Gifts turns charitable donations on their head, with contributors giving donations through the medium of gifts presented as products on their store.

Quantifying donations by the value of vital items such as mosquito nets, stoves and even live chickens, the Christian Aid team created a dedicated online store for members of the public to ‘gift’ vital supplies to those in need. Building the initial store on Shopify, they soon realised they needed the expertise of Kubix to help them make the most of the platform and realise a new vision for online fundraising.

Stuck using an outdated Shopify theme with little customisation, it was our challenge to align the Charity Gifts Store with the rest of the Christian Aid brand and get those donations rolling in.

Chickens, Cows and Cocoa

Working closely with the Christian Aid team, we undertook a detailed analysis of their current store, creating a UX audit to examine issues and potential opportunities. From this we developed a mood board, taking inspiration from across the web and detailed Christian Aid brand guidelines.

Our designers worked together to produce an entirely new design for their store that strictly adhered to the Christian Aid brand identity. Incorporating not only colours and fonts, but also their two “design system grids” - the Active Grid and the Fixed Grid, these were used to add contrast and movement to the site. The Active Grid was implemented on "energetic" elements of the design, such as key graphics to represent branding, titles and headings, with everything set on a 3% or -3% tilt. The Fixed Grid was then used to anchor more formal elements such as body text and unique selling points.

Those who order or donate can choose to receive a printed card symbolising their gift. These cards feature a variety of playful illustrations, such as chickens, cows and cocoa beans. Our Head of Design Elodie carefully recreated these illustrations in the digital realm to be used across the new Christian Aid store. Repurposing some of their chickens, a new design was created to encourage sign ups to their email newsletter, featuring chickens taking a stroll down an egg-paved road. Egg-cellent.

Going With The (Shopify) Flow

Development soon began with an emphasis on efficiency. Working to strict budgets, every decision Christian Aid made must maximise funds given by donors, ensuring money was spent to advance their mission of eradicating extreme poverty in the world.

One of their goals in redeveloping the website was to increase average order spend and additional donations. To achieve this, we developed a custom feature that allows customers to specify an additional donation on top of their order. Customers simply choose an amount and head to checkout.

Our development team also implemented Gift Aid into the site, allowing UK taxpayers to increase their donations by 25% through government-supported tax relief. The feature automatically calculates the Gift Aid amount in the user’s basket, giving them a simple checkbox they can tick to indicate the giving of Gift Aid.

Another bespoke addition to the site came in the form of the Christian Aid cards, which needed a host of delivery options, including by post, email and to a specific recipient. We made use of the Shopify Flow automation tool to make this possible, with each delivery method representing a different line item within Shopify, and every option generating a corresponding form that changes depending upon the information required.
