Case Study
It’s hard to conceive just how long Piccadilly-based high-end tailor Budd has been in business.
Founded in 1910 by shirtmaker Harold Budd, this prestigious store has stood proudly in Piccadilly Arcade, London, selling shirts, collars, pyjamas, hosiery, dinner jackets and other finery to devoted West End shoppers. This devotion to quality fashion for the upper echelons of society even made it into the lyrics of a Gerschwin Broadway musical number in 1919:
“My car of choice is a Rolls-Royce. I go to Stetson for my hats and Budd for my cravats.”
When Budd first approached Kubix about their website, their team was tired of their old Magento 2 platform slowing down their online operations. They wanted a more autonomous approach to the website, so started to seek a team that could fulfil their needs and move the website over to Shopify with speed and efficiency. Time was of the essence for this project, as they needed their new site to go live by the end of October when their Magento commerce contract was due to expire.
With the migration kicking off in July, this gave us just four months to design and build the site, and migrate hundreds of products over to Shopify. Kubix accepted the challenge, and the project went straight through to the creative team.

Looking to the likes of Drakes, Luca Faloni, Anderson Sheppard and Hilditch & Key for inspiration, our designers immediately identified areas for improvement - from bringing Budd’s 110-year-old legacy into focus, to optimising the product page layout and creating a more intuitive Made to Measure service. After picking out the theme, they started on some additional details such as bespoke buttons (not unlike a Budd shirt), branded colours and ways of telling the Budd story through their About Us and homepage sections. In a rather whimsical twist of fate, our design team settled on two fonts - EB Garamond and Satoshi - that our team had used for our own Kubix site just a couple of months before. “Well,” we told them, “If it ain’t broke…”
Our initial concepts were well received by the Budd team, and many of our original suggestions ended up in the final published theme. During development, our developers worked closely with the Budd team to stay on track for that October deadline. One of the key configurations for the site was their Made to Measure service, so customers could input everything from collar size and style to hand monogramming to get a shirt that was perfect down to the finest detail. During this entire process, our Operations team was working behind the scenes to migrate Budd’s data, including a demo migration, full data migration and a delta migration to ensure that everything transferred across as smoothly as possible and no missing details were left back on the Magento platform. We also integrated the new site with their inventory management platform, Veeqo, to keep online stock in sync with their retail POS and prevent overselling.

"Kubix have exceeded our expectations from beginning to end. They have been timely and precise throughout the entire process, clear in the explanations and assistance and know Shopify and their development inside out. We have been blown away by them to be honest." - The Budd Team

With each step of the process working in tandem, the new Budd site went live exactly on schedule, and the entire Budd team were delighted with the results (so much that they sent us huge boxes of doughnuts to share!). Our team was delighted with how beautiful the site looked and worked in such a short space of time - a testament to both parties coming together towards a tight but achievable goal. The only thing left was to support them in the weeks that followed with ongoing Shopify training as they got used to their new digital home.
We could have left the project there, but after a successful launch, Budd decided to take things up another notch! There had long been discussions about adding even more customisation, and after Budd had settled into its new site, we knew it was time to introduce the Made to Measure shirt configurator.
We worked to add the new product configurator, wherein a customer could personalise their custom shirt online and experience the tailored perfection Budd is known for in person.
After setting a high UX standard with the website build, we had to make sure the new elements added upheld the same elegant feel and ease of use for customers. With a clear UI for the customer to navigate through, and the configurator providing helpful information to guide them in making their choices, we knew we’d hit that standard.
During the configurator development we made the most of metaobjects to allow different forms of customization for different products. From collar style to button placement, there was now an opportunity to design a shirt tailored specifically to a customer's tastes and fit.
The bar had definitely been set high, but these finishing touches allowed both Budd and Kubix to leap over it effortlessly.
For Budd, this project represents a key milestone on their 110-year-old business journey as they look to the future of retail and embrace new technologies. There are many things that define their brand - from their Budd collar, to their iconic Budd stripe, Budd bows, or, as they call it, their ‘enduring love for Madder silks’. We hope that over the coming weeks, months and years, as Budd goes into their next decade of business, their website will be a defining feature of their brand too. With the freedom to make regular changes and updates, not to mention no longer having to face unpredictable costs, Shopify is going to serve Budd for years to come.
A Budd shirt is made to last. And now, thanks to Kubix, so is their website.
