Case Study
A Magento migration for a successful beading brand.
That was the question posed to our Kubix team last summer when Brighton based craft store Beads Unlimited first got in touch about migrating their website over to Shopify. After introductory virtual meetings with Tom and his team, our answer was a definite yes!
If you often find yourself browsing the aisles of your local craft store, you’re likely familiar with the name Beads Unlimited. If not, you can probably hazard a guess at what they specialise in. Yes, this craft focused emporium stocks thousands of varieties of beads and accessories - from polymer clay to Swarovski crystals, beading wires to charms and findings. Ever since the company first opened its doors as the Brighton Bead Shop in March 1986, the Beads Unlimited team have built a one-stop shop for all things jewellery making, supplying not just glass beads, but a vast cosmopolitan mix of crafting supplies. Now? They’ve grown into a booming online and in-store business stocking all the beads a crafter could ever need, with a world famous speedy service and a friendly, personal approach to boot. Head to your local Hobbycraft and you’ll find their trinkets and treats in there too.
A company of this calibre needs an online store that will grow as they do. Tom and his team were introduced to Kubix through one of our partner companies Brightpearl, when they were looking to move on from their online home on Magento 1. Tom understood that relocating to Shopify would provide a simpler, more streamlined backend for him and his staff to navigate, and that this updated platform would provide the security any website needs too. The Beads Unlimited name was fast becoming a staple on any keen crafter’s shopping list, so, tools at the ready, our team were excited to get stuck into this project.

Before getting to work on this mammoth migration, the very first bead on our string of tasks was refreshing the brand’s logo. Taking elements from their existing identity, our team designed a new logo that was simplified and streamlined with a higher contrast for better visibility as well as a better optimisation for every screen. As we moved onto the design of their Shopify homepage and with further elements coming together, the new home for this bazaar of beads was beginning to look like a masterpiece.
But, much like any intricate beading project, it’s not simply about how the finished product looks - it’s about the way it functions too. The migration from Magento 1 over to Shopify was to be a mammoth task. From the specification of products and filtering, to 301 redirects and migrating blog content, this was no small feat. Unlimited beads means just that: thousands of product varieties for every charm and chain! We created a brand new set-up for their navigation so that each and every category could be easily located, as well as hub pages to streamline the site.
Mail order beads have been a part of Beads Unlimited’s business right from the beginning and, starting from just a bulky file on the counter, the wholesale side of their company now ships worldwide. This brand new website needed to work seamlessly not only for direct-to-customer sales, but for wholesale buyers too. Our team integrated a wholesale app that would provide a fully unified, streamlined service for all the B2B customers and B2C customers to checkout on the same website. This meant that new B2B customers could also sign up on the website for full online access and easy browsing.

Since the launch of their brand new website, the team at Beads Unlimited have stayed on with our Kubix marketing team to take their beads into even more homes around the country and the world. With sales up by a third in the first month and new shoppers up by a quarter, our future with the Beads team certainly is looking bright.
Having set the business up with Google and Facebook ads for the first time, we’re happy to see that the Beads Unlimited team are already reaping the rewards of a solid advertising campaign. After a year when getting crafty at home was one of the only ways to keep the family entertained, handmade activities and creative projects are becoming increasingly popular. We’ve got no doubt that Beads Unlimited will find their way into many more crafting homes in the years to come.
