Every Dog Has Its Day.

Pet brands have become something of a speciality for our team over the years. With pet-based web projects ranging from the ordinary (collars, personalised beds and blankets) to the more unusual (insect protein dog snacks, anyone?), our team certainly knows our Miniature Schnauzers from our Mink Ragdolls. And whilst our office remains divided over Team Dog and Team Cat, it was Team Dog who had their day for our latest website brief: Wilsons Pet Food.

Scottish brand Wilsons has been producing premium dog food for over 160 years. Back in 1861, father and son duo Robert and John gave up their farm in the Scottish countryside to become grain and feed merchants. Borrowing a horse and cart, they bought and sold animal feed to local farmers and grew an established customer base before producing their own.

Fast forward nearly two centuries and Wilsons is one of the longest established pet food brands in the UK. All of their delicious recipes are crafted and produced in their two factories based in Scotland. They are the only UK-based manufacturer of cold pressed dog food. By pressing the food at a much cooler 65 degrees, the food retains the nutrients and is gentler on dog’s stomachs. With 25% protein, these packs are ticking all the boxes for pet nutritionists and owners alike.

Designed With UX In Mind.

When business owner Craig rang up to ask about revamping their current Shopify store, we spotted a good oppawtunity to help this brand. Craig had admired our work on other stores such as HiLife Pets, and wanted to know if we could build him a new site that would convert more highly than his old one. His team had lots of ideas, and a clear brief for what they were after. We assessed the work involved, and then it was time to get started.

For this design, our team broke away from the rigid blocks and straight lines that we see on so many sites. Instead, small hand-drawn icons, custom buttons and undulating lines give the site a fluidity and sense of fun - a nod to the unpredictable and joyful experiences of every dog owner.

But a beautiful Shopify store isn’t just about the way it looks. Wilsons wanted to make sure that their shoppers were informed about their dog food, so our developers added in additional features such as a feeding guide based on dog weight, and clear descriptions of each product and ingredients to ease shopping decisions.

"The team at Kubix have been a pleasure to work with and looking forward to the next project already. Understood the brand and the requirements meaning we received something that fits us perfectly. Thank you Jo, Jess and the team." - Craig, Wilson's Owner

Re-tail success.

Functionality was also a very important part of this project, as Wilsons needed to introduce a new loyalty programme for pet owners to earn points as they shop, review, refer and follow on social media. Our design team built a dedicated page explaining the benefits of the loyalty programme for users and to encourage the community feel that Wilsons have always prided themselves on.

Given that our challenge was to increase website conversions, the next step in our project was to install an app that would encourage social proof. This app was Okendo - a sophisticated reviews platform that allows shoppers to leave high-impact customer reviews on individual products. Pet owners can leave video reviews, photos and information about their own dog such as breed and age. The best part? Okendo also incorporates with their new loyalty scheme, so customers can earn rewards with each review they leave.

The final, and arguably biggest feature, of the Wilsons store was their subscription programme. Ideal for regular customers who didn’t want the hassle of ordering from their site every month or so - this addition has already been a huge success, as shoppers can now sign up in minutes and get dog food delivered to their door every 2, 4 or 6 weeks. The Wilsons team know exactly how many regular orders to produce, and customers can amend, delay or cancel their subscription at any time.

Once the Wilsons family were happy with all of the extra features on their Shopify store, we hit the “Go live” button and watched the sales flood in. The customer feedback was instantly encouraging, with new orders coming from dog owners up and down the country. Now that subscription orders are growing week on week, it’s straight over to our marketing team who have been busy behind the scenes building a whole host of ads for both social channels and Google.

We think the finished results are rather fetching. Let’s see if you do too. Discover the Wilsons site right here.
