Case Study
A Magento migration for Welsh homeware store.
They say that home is where the heart is, but just over in Wales it’s actually Adra - the Welsh word for home - where their heart resides. Back in 2007, Welshwoman Angharad turned her passion for patriotism into a successful business with her beautiful gift store Adra Home. Spurred on by her enthusiasm for other local businesses, Adra was created in order to source and sell gorgeous local products to the Welsh community and beyond. Now after 13 years of trading, Adra Home shows no signs of slowing down. With both a thriving online store and a physical shop located in the grounds of beautiful Parc Glynllifon, Angharad and her team have been busy making a name for themselves as a pillar of the small business community.
When Angharad approached Kubix after finding us on Shopify Experts, we grabbed our Welsh dictionaries and said: “Os gwelwch yn dda!” (That’s please for those that aren’t familiar with the dialect). Why? One look at Adra and we were hooked. From printed accessories and handmade Welsh jewellery to fun greeting cards and beautiful framed prints, the store really does have something for any proud Welshman or woman.
Whilst the old store was built on Magento, Angharad was after a migration project to create a website that would work more smoothly, showcasing her full product range whilst also offering site visitors the ability to seamlessly switch between English and Welsh versions of the site. Enter Shopify - stage left. We couldn’t wait to get stuck in and become Welsh for a little while, so we rolled up our sleeves and got started.

Now, this project wasn’t for the faint-hearted. 2000 products needed migrating, and Adra needed a Welsh and English version of the site. Angharad didn’t want the Welsh translations to be part-baked, so our Operations team needed to carefully analyse and recommend the right translation app for her. We chose Langify, and with two store URLs, customers can easily head to the Welsh version of the site by using a handy dropdown.
But how do you go about translating every single word on a Shopify store? Translating a website doesn’t just start and finish with the site pages. Everything from newsletter sign-ups, to confirmation emails and gift cards required both an English setting and Welsh variation. Add a solid 2,000 products to the mix, and this language project loomed over us like one giant tongue-twister.
Given that our knowledge of Welsh is about as limited as our attempts to actually speak it, we left the translations to Angharad, whose bilingual talents put our team to shame. Despite her complaints of repetitive strain injury from scrolling back and forth between the two sites, her hard work paid off and before long, the transition between them was smoother than butter. Our design team put their fine fingers to work with bespoke features and personalised icons that would add little Welsh touches to the details. Angharad’s vision had come to life and Adra’s Welsh roots were shining on every page.

“Shopify Experts by name and by nature! Highly experienced with excellent communication and customer service from project start to finish. Gold stars all around!” - Anharad, Adra Founder

Now? Adra Home are fully equipped to handle any e-commerce challenge, and they’re paving the way for other Welsh brands to do the same. Whilst Adra's new site launched during COVID times, luckily Angharad was able to continue selling online to her eager customers. And as for Angharad herself? She’s a Shopify natural, having picked up the platform with ease. Since the re-launch, Adra’s retail store has moved to Shopify POS too, and you can find it situated in the grounds of beautiful Parc Glynllifon country park just outside Caernarfon.
After a great migration journey with Angharad and Adra, our team were happy to simply sit back and relax, confident in the future of this happy gift shop. But our projects team were utterly chuffed when Angharad sent them a giant ‘Thank You’ parcel full of Adra’s finest offerings. To say we’re proud of Angharad’s success is an understatement. We know exactly where we’re heading next time a trip to Cymru is on the cards. (See, we’re picking it up already!)
