The Wheels In Motion.

From flag pole fox tails to Lambretta exhaust pipes, Beedspeed has everything a scooter enthusiast could ever need for the road. The story of Beedspeed has been the ride of a lifetime, and taking the business onto the next leg of its journey was an adventure we couldn’t wait to buckle up for.

Founded in the 1980s as a simple stall visiting scooter rallies, Beedspeed opened its first shop in Grimsby in 1983, quickly becoming extremely popular amongst local scooter enthusiasts. Right from their early days they’ve worked to cater to the scooter community, providing space in their store for scooter clubs to meet up.

Beedspeed developed a reputation with scooter enthusiasts across the country by taking their stall to National Scooter Rallies around the UK. The company decided to capitalise upon this nationwide appeal in the early 2000s by launching their first website. In no time at all, Beedspeed was shipping parts from the likes of Lambretta and Vespa to all corners of the globe.

Shortly before we started working with Beedspeed, the business was purchased from its founder by current owner Dan. He saw the need to bring the business forward with cutting edge e-commerce. But as a business with 15,000 individual products, and an ageing infrastructure, Dan saw the need to transform more than look and feel of the website.

Bringing The Business Up To Speed.

In 2017, Dan sought the expertise of an e-commerce agency to help with this transformation. Given our ties with the local Cleethorpes area, Kubix was a natural choice for Dan and the team to make this project a reality. Our first priority was to bring the Beedspeed website into the future of e-commerce. We set out on what became one of our largest and most complex migration projects to date, moving Beedspeed from an ageing platform that at that point was almost two decades old. The site as it stood held Dan back in his ambitions for the business, as vital functionality such as its payment gateway frequently went down, preventing sales from being made.

With 15,000 SKUs and a constantly changing product line ranging from tiny bearings and gaskets, to large parts like entire body frames and exhaust pipes, Dan needed a new platform that could continually scale and adapt. Shopify was the natural fit.

We constructed an entirely new website, making it easy for site visitors to navigate and sort products specifically for their model of scooter. We used Shopify apps and features to make it easy for Dan and his team to quickly add products, manage orders and delivery information. It became clear though that Beedspeed needed innovation to take place on more than just its website.

Revving Up Operations.

Dan and his team quickly realised Kubix could offer so much more than amazing e-commerce, as it became apparent that a new website was just the start. Beedspeed handles thousands of products, from dozens of different suppliers, with a constant churn of new stock being channelled through their warehouse and sent to customers. Using our expertise of the Shopify partners ecosystem, we consulted with the company to examine their processes end-to-end, and worked to find an integrated solution capable of supercharging their operations.

We implemented the tools of Shopify Technology Partner Linnworks to develop an entirely new operations infrastructure that integrates with the Beedspeed Shopify store. Linnworks unifies the tracking of product inventory across all sales channels, whether that be Shopify, physical retail stores, or on third party marketplaces like eBay. It offers an easy way to track inventory as it comes into the warehouse, and then as it goes out of the warehouse as an order to a customer. It also helps track postage and deliveries with automated labelling, barcodes, and integration with couriers. The system has been invaluable, and helped the company grow even further, streamlining their processes, increasing efficiency, and driving sales.

Scooting Into The Future.

Marketing became our next focus with Beedspeed, as their old platform made it very hard to capture useful analytics. Using Shopify, we developed a bespoke analytics package to track specific KPIs related to sales of different kinds of products. We used this to develop social ad campaigns, email campaigns, and Google Shopping ads, all tailored to specific customer segments based on their buying habits. The theme of personalisation is key to our next steps. We’re working to introduce more personalisation onto the website, so customers are presented with bespoke merchandise based on their previous purchases, creating a tailor made experience for every site visitor.

In November 2021, we reached a significant milestone with Beedspeed as they joined our growing list of Shopify Plus clients; a reflection of their growth and burgeoning sales figures. Plus means they join the ranks of the world’s leading online retailers, and will help them as they scoot onto the next phase of their journey.

The future is bright for Beedspeed, and we can’t wait to see where they go next.
