Ethical baby-wearing brand, Oscha Slings, is a Scottish company with a passion for supporting babies’ development and promoting secure attachment. How do they do this? Through baby wraps, slings and carriers, specially woven with responsibly sourced yarns and patterns that allow parents to feel stylish while caring for their children. Put simply, they make baby slings with parents in mind. What makes this brand particularly special is their official The Lord of the Rings™ inspired collection. With exclusive rights from Middle-earth Enterprises, the Middle-earth™ Collection features gorgeous designs steeped in a mythology that has enthralled generations of children and adults.

The Challenge.

Oscha approached Kubix with one goal in mind: to create a highly effective e-commerce store with beautiful finishing touches that would reflect their connection to the planet. They needed to convey a lot of features in a way that would not overwhelm the customer, and they thought Shopify was the platform to do it.

Before starting their journey with us, Oscha’s website resided on a custom-built platform maintained by a single developer. Not only was it a risk for their site to be dependent on just one individual, but it also made it challenging for their company to grow as they were not self-sufficient.

A move to Shopify would remove these barriers, not only providing them with a whole new world of functionality, but also enabling them to manage it themselves. They simply needed the tools to do so and our team was ready to equip them for future growth.

Moodboard & Design Process.

Our designers were the first to carry the baton, with a Concepts Call arranged to present a moodboard of banner and icon ideas. As the client’s first taste of how the project would come to life, it was important to introduce key elements here. Being an inclusive brand for all parents (not just mothers), we were keen to bring in more of the ‘dad’ element, not only through imagery, but by keeping the design accessible to all as well. The fluidity of Oscha’s products inspired a move away from sharp edges. Flowing elements were incorporated - from the relaxed announcement bar to the nature-inspired website banners - all reflecting the freedom and movement of an Oscha baby sling.

The team at Oscha were delighted with this first look, so our design team were able to present a more cohesive homepage design to them right away. Not much has changed in terms of design from this initial moodboard presentation - a credit to our designer’s interpretation of Oscha’s vision.

The Great Migration.

Technically speaking, the most complex aspect of this project was the migration of data from Oscha’s old platform onto their new Shopify store. This was no small feat for our team. It was not just products that needed to be brought over, but different iterations of products too, as well as information on baby wearing, blog posts, guides and more. This data needed to be accurately portrayed if Oscha were going to show off their products and services in all their glory.

Moving the client over to Shopify, we needed to be confident that it would be a platform that worked for them and their needs. Our team was able to help them understand the platform in a way that benefited their business, opening new doors for the future. This is where Shopify 2.0 came into its own. With many different pages that they wanted to create, page templates and custom sections enabled them to do it in style.

Now? You can find baby wearing guides, referral schemes, loyalty programs and even a Find Your Sling Quiz! The Oscha website is the perfect example of how to make good use of the 2.0 templates.

Close, Connected & Comfortable.

The most notable aspect of this project, from design to development, was the integration of a second ‘brand’ within the same Shopify site. What did this entail? Two sets of brand guidelines included on one website. Oscha wanted to highlight their Middle-earth™ collection beyond just a carousel on the homepage. Instead, we separated this unique collection onto its own landing page - something Oscha had never done before, and a challenge that our team were eager to undertake.

Allowing Middle Earth its own landing page that was easily accessible - sitting neatly in the header of the site - would enable the collection to feel independent but not disconnected. Hand drawn elements incorporated by our designers were included not only to reflect the mystical world of Tolkein, but also to provide Hand-drawn with the homepage. Developer Phil noted the journey of creating these separate sections together as a particular highlight, and the cohesively between the two designs is one aspect that our design team is most proud of on this project.

Weaving In The Final Touches.

Better functionality was not the only reason that a move to Shopify was the right one for Oscha. As a global brand selling internationally, they needed an online store that would facilitate this with ease. Shopify Markets was the answer here. This cross-border management tool meant that Oscha was accessible to anyone in the world, automatically recognising a customer’s location and converting the site display to the relevant currency, shipping rates, product availability and more.

Alongside this Shopify management tool, our Operations team also integrated a number of apps that would further streamline the functionality and usability of Oscha’s new store. From Report Pundit which allows their team to create custom reports, to Rebuy for cross and up-selling across the store, and ShipStation which automatically generates shipping labels, each app and tool recommended by our team was carefully considered in line with Oscha's needs.

A journey through Oscha’s new Shopify home will reveal beautiful imagery, unique products and a user experience that is a pleasure from first peep to final purchase. Whether it’s the bespoke illustrations that showcase Oscha’s USPs, or the custom icons and hover animation when viewing a collection page, every small detail just as much makes this site as the more obvious ones.
